Our sessions are run by caring and committed staff. All staff have gained a NVQ or QCF qualification and are trained in First Aid and have SAFE (child protection training) for children. They've also each undergone 'Step On' training (renewable every 2 years) on behaviour management. There is also a setting SENCO (special educational needs coordinator) who can help with any special requirements your child may have.
We operate a Keyperson system where each member of staff is responsible for a small group of children. The keyperson is the main contact with the Nursery and will work in partnership with parents to ensure each child reaches its full potential.
Healthy snacks and drinks are offered during morning sessions. Any special dietary requests can be catered for.
The nursery is located within the grounds of Lyng Primary School. Nursery sessions take place in our own purpose built classroom and outdoor recreation area. We have disabled facilities including ramps, low level sinks etc.
The transition to School
There are strong links with Lyng Primary School enabling children to become familiar with the school surroundings whilst in the care of our staff. Transition sessions also take place between Hockering and Gt. Witchingham primary schools. During the summer term we have weekly Rising 5 sessions to help prepare the children for going to Primary School.
Navy or pink T-Shirts and navy Sweatshirts with our Nursery Logo on are available to purchase from Birds of Dereham at Unit D off Yaxham Road (near Halfords and beside Paul's Cycles) or online from Birds here.
We follow the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage - revised 2012) which requires us to provide a balance of child and adult led activities. The children are able to take advantage of our continuous provision both inside and out.
The revised curriculum is split into 2 areas. Under 3’s activities are focused on the Prime Areas because these provide the building blocks for life long learning. The Specific Areas are incorporated more into a child’s development after the age of 3. Priority for development will always be given to the Prime Areas:
THE PRIME AREAS
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We help our children to build relationships, develop self confidence and self awareness. We also support our children to manage their feelings and behaviour.
Communication and Language
We encourage our children to develop their listening, speaking and attention skills.
Our children are able to develop their co-ordination, control and manipulation skills safely both indoors and out. We promote healthy lifestyles by providing healthy snacks each day and encouraging exercise. We support children to manage their own care independently within the setting.
THE SPECIFIC AREAS
Our children are supported in developing their understanding of numbers, shapes, space and measure.
Understanding of the World
We encourage children to understand members of the communities in which they live. We share activities about other cultures of the world and use technology to develop life skills.
Our children are encouraged and able to develop early reading and mark making skills, through books and media.
Expressive Arts and Design
We provide opportunities for our children to express themselves through a variety of artistic methods – dance, music, painting, role play.
